Working within the Petro/chemical manufacturing site at Huntsman Tioxide Grimsby, Ron Hull Demolition Ltd carried out the demolition of Plant No.1, which included remote demolition of structures, tanks and vessels throughout the plant. Explosive demolitions of scrubber stacks and high reach demolition technique were also used.
Acting as principal contractor, Ron Hull Demolition Ltd developed and maintained a stringent permit to work system to co-ordinate their own work and that of third party contractors during the project. Removal of hazardous substances stored within the tanks was of paramount importance prior to the start of the works. A formal handover procedure was arranged giving Ron Hull Demolition the 'green light' to commence the works.
Through the undertaking of the companies' robust risk assessment procedures, a safe system of work was developed which included decontamination procedures, controlled access and strict hygiene procedures were also adopted.
As it was anticipated that substance residue would be present within the tanks, cold cutting demolition techniques were employed. A 75 tonne demolition machine fitted with shear attachment was used to cut the tanks into small 2m x 2m sections. These small 2m x 2m sections were quarantined at a safe designated area where the client cleaned any NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials) residues. All the works were background monitored to identify NORM levels.
Works were completed successfully and well within the projected programme of works, maintaining the client's and Ron Hull Demolition's goals and aspirations.
