Over 7 weeks the 10-acre Forticrete Works Site has been levelled and cleared by utilising a combination of both mechanical and explosive demolition techniques.
The project involved demolition of all plant structures ranging from manufacturing and warehousing buildings to the offices and weighbridge, including the explosive demolition of 2 x 80' high silos which were heavy duty steel structures. Given the thickness of the steel the decision was taken that the quickest and safest way of bringing them down was to use explosives.
The silos behaved perfectly, with explosives blasting a couple of seconds apart, bringing them down exactly as intended - absolutely inch perfect. Once down on the ground the towers were then taken to pieces safely using a 50 ton mounted shear and manual oxygen Propane cutting on the larger sections.
Everything from the site is being recycled in what is proving to be a particularly green operation, with all concrete/brickwork taken by a local haulage contractor for re-use as a hard standing area. Steel and other metals have been removed to our Recycling & Waste Management Facility in Rotherham, where they are being processed and sorted in preparation for recycling.
Absolutely everything that can be re-used has been recovered, with zero to landfill, demonstrating once again our proven ability to maximise recycling
opportunities.
